Coyotes win opener, adventure continues

Last night I began my second season broadcasting South Dakota women’s basketball on the radio.

I feel extremely privileged to have this opportunity. There are way to many people to thank for the chance to do this, but I will say this – For those of you who have impacted or influenced me along the way, Thank you!

The team knew they were in for a battle last night and fell behind by 11 in the first four minutes. Once the rust wore off they battled back for a halftime lead. In the second half it was back and forth, in fact, the final three minutes saw four lead changes. The last was the more important as Raeshel Contreras connected on a 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining to put USD in front 80-78. After two free throws from Nicole Seekamp and one more from Contreras the Coyotes wrapped up an 83-78 road victory to start the season.

What do we take from the game? The bench was tremendous. Kelly Stewart and Bridget Arens were big sparks in reserve role. It’s great to have Heidi Hoff back in the lineup and freshman Kate Liveringhouse had a solid start to her college career. Contreras picked up where she left off last season – shooting 6-11 from the 3-point line  and scoring a team high 24 points. More importantly she grabbed nine rebounds. Some of the starters struggled in the game and when your starters struggle but your bench can pick up the slack it’s a great sign. I know it is plenty early in the year but this team has the blue print to be very good this year.

It’s always an adventure on these road trips. As I write this we are waiting for a mechanic to get here to put new batteries in the bus. We are already an hour behind schedule to head to Lawrence, Kan. I am excited to see this team play the Big 12’s Jayhawks and see how they match up. Regardless of the outcome this was a big win to open the season, make no mistake. Drake will be a major contender in the Missouri Valley Conference.

So far the food adventure has taken us to Cracker Barrel, Jason’s Deli and Applebee’s. Yes, it is important to note the places we eat.

One goal this season is to utilize time better on the trips. I have actually worked out twice on this trip, which may be a new record. Use the extra time to do something better for yourself, at least that’s the idea. It only helps the YankTON Challenge effort that we have been doing the last couple months. It ends in a couple weeks so I am working towards that push to the end to win the radio station portion of the challenge.

On another note there was a decent showing of USD fans in attendance Friday night. It’s always nice to see some red in the stands for away games. With that said, get ready for that home opener – Nov. 24 at 7pm when the Yotes play UC-Irvine.

I was a little disappointed the schedules conflicted and I couldn’t be on the coverage of the Yankton Bucks state championship. The Bucks won an overtime battle 34-33 over Brookings to claim the 11AA title – the first football championship since 2002. It’s tough for me to cover a team all season long and not be there to see the dream come true. But we listened to the end of the game as Brookings elected to go for two and the win instead of the PAT for a tie. I credit the coaches and players for taking that chance to win the title.

If you aren’t doing anything tomorrow afternoon it would be a pleasure to have you listen to the game as the South Dakota women challenge Kansas. Pregame begins at 1:30pm with tipoff at 2:00pm on Classic Hits 106.3 in the Yankton/Vermillion area and online around the world at kvht.com. Also available on the KVHT mobile app. Download it!

Well the batteries are being changed in the bus and I think the adventure might continue soon. My goal is to keep this blog updated throughout the season on adventures. Next week we head to Portland State and Washington.

Until the next time, have yourself a nice day.
