This site is designed for John to share thoughts on the world of sports and in life. John has worked for a few radio stations and has had the chance to travel the country with the South Dakota women’s basketball team. There are many things that happen along the way from conversation with players and coaches to behind the scenes adventures. John has received awards in Nebraska and Colorado for his work covering sports. You can also find more information about John and hear some of his demos.
John Thayer is the Sports Director and Operations Manager for Classic Hits 106.3 and ESPN Radio 1570 in Yankton, SD. He is in his 3rd season as play-by-play voice of University of South Dakota women’s basketball and also covers Yankton High School. He also works as a sideline reporter for Coyote Sports Network coverage of USD football games and has filled-in for men’s basketball broadcasts. John is also the host of “On the John”, a Sports Talk radio show that airs from 9:00-11:00am on 1570AM and kvtk.com. The show made it’s debut in August 2012.
Prior to moving to South Dakota John was the News/Sports Director for Stereo AM 610 KCSR and Western Nebraska’s real rock 107.7 KBPY in Chadron, Nebraska. Along with sports updates throughout the day, he was heard covering all of the Chadron Cardinal football and basketball games. He was also a co-host of “Live at 4” on 610 AM. He also handled news coverage which included covering a hostage situation in Alliance, Neb., Chadron’s search for a new City Manager, school bond issue and more.
John has spent time working with the Victory Sports Network as a sportscaster, show host and feature writer for the NAIA national publications.
John worked for High Plains Radio in Holyoke, Colorado and did freelance work for 1240 KHAS, Colorado Preps, KUTT 99.5 and the Tiger Sports Network. In 2011 John added Channel 21 in Lincoln to the list as the sideline reporter for Nebraska Wesleyan University football games.
A graduate of Doane College in Crete, Neb., John helped establish the Tiger sports Network in his final year as a student. While a student at Doane, John served as the play-by-play voice for many Doane sports including football, basketball, baseball, soccer, softball, and volleyball.
